University Only Program

 

 

The programs vary according to your choice of: Standard or Intensive classroom hours, length and time of study, Chinese ability, and University.

 

Standard and Intensive

 

University Only standard language programs consist of 4 classroom hours per day, typically broken up into 4 sessions of 50 minutes each with a 10 minute break between periods.


The Intensive programs consist of the standard 4 hour classroom instruction plus an additional 2 hours of one-on-one language tutoring. For more information see below:

Length and time of Study

 

Real World Chinese offers a selection of program lengths from 1 week to 1 year. However, each university or school sets its own schedule and number of programs. In order to ensure your spot at the University of your Choice, you are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

 

 

Level

Upon your arrival at your selected destination, you will be given a brief written and oral test in order to determine your proficiency of Mandarin Chinese, and to ensure that you are in a comfortable education environment. Whether you only know how to say Happy New Year or could argue your way out of a speeding ticket in court, there is a class that can accommodate you. The six levels of proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking are as follows:

In order to ensure your Mandarin skills are developed in the best possible way, the classes have been divided into the five key language developing areas: reading, writing, listening, speaking (oral), and grammar.

Reading: Classes will focus on building vocabulary and strengthening reading comprehension, with a focus on accuracy and speed.

Writing: Classes will introduce and develop the composition of characters and stroke orders of radicals, or bushou.

Listening:
Classes will focus on improving listening comprehension of spoken Mandarin at regular speed. At the beginner level the primary focus will be understanding basic facts; at the advanced level the primary focus will be developing implicit comprehension and drawing inferences from complicated passages.

Speaking (Oral): Classes will facilitate the development of proper pronunciation and intonation, and will help students recognize common stress patterns in Mandarin.

Grammar: Classes will introduce and develop proper sentence structure, word order, spelling and colloquial expressions.

 

Assessment

 

Participants' progress is assessed by continuous homework assignments and tests throughout their program. Semester and academic year programs have formal final term examinations in addition to tests. Attendance is mandatory. Participants are awarded diplomas at the end of all programs and official transcripts can be obtained from Universities for most programs 12 weeks and longer.


Accommodation

 

PRC laws and university regulations permit international students to live on campus or in approved housing. Based on security, location and comfort, Real World Chinese has extremely strict criterion to select accommodation for students. For example, all accommodations must be within 20 minutes on foot from classroom. In order to make sure the accommodation meets west people’s needs and life style, our housing officers must have checked each housing room in site before we arrange you to live in. Accommodation options include: Local Apartments, Student Apartments, Homestay, University Housing, or your choice of Hotel. Shared or Private Apartments are available.


Arrival Transfer

Free transport from the airport in Beijing to your accommodation is provided. The following important details are required at least one week before your arrival:

An emergency number is provided in the Welcome Pack for any last minute arrival delays. Participants are met at their arrival point and accompanied to their accommodation.

Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance

 

For peace of mind, Real World Chinese programs include Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance. StudenCare Insurance covers emergency medical and dental treatment, pro-rata return of program fee in case of curtailment, personal liability and more.

Visa

 

Students should apply for an F class visa (business visa). These visas are usually issued for 1, 3 or 6 months. Students wishing to study for over six months need to apply for an X visa (student visa). Some countries' consulates may only provide L class visas (tourist visa); if this is the case Real World Chinese will help the applicant change their visa once they have arrived in China.

An invitation and admission letter is usually required to obtain an F class visa and will be provided for the applicant once they have been accepted on to a course and paid the total program fee.
