Real World Chinese

Business Programs

“Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he’ll eat forever.”
- Chinese proverb

With over a million businesses located around the country, a skyrocketing economy and over 153 Fortune 500 enterprises investing in Shanghai projects alone, it is no wonder the world is looking to China as a center for foreign trade. With all eyes focussing on Beijing in 2008, it would almost be foolish not to consider investing in China’s foreign market.

Of course, foreign investing is not as simple as it seems. There are many factors to consider, most of them cultural. One cannot simply walk into a CEO meeting at Sony in downtown Shanghai, mutter the appropriate Mandarin hello, shake hands with those sitting around the table, and assume you will have business partners for life. There is a curtain that lies beyond an executive title, a handshake and a greeting and Real World Chinese wants to show it all to you.

Whether your company is as large as Sony, or as small as the room you are in, there is business opportunity for you in China – and Real World Chinese can help make it happen.

AIM

The business program of Real World Chinese combines the language program with the opportunity to immerse yourself in the current business theories and practices of China. Learn the regulations and laws surrounding foreign trade, and visit a variety of actual businesses to observe the policies in action. Our philosophy is the same, regardless of the program you choose: to truly learn a language, one must use all of the senses and experience the language in its everyday use. Touring a wide range of company locations, being taught by leading business professors, and interning with an actual company will not only increase your job opportunity and business investments, but it will also broaden your understanding of the foreign market.

STRUCTURE

The business program is 5 weeks long; because we want you to be able to navigate your way through a business meeting in China, we have structured the program to allow you to attend Mandarin classes in the morning, and business lectures (taught in English) in the afternoons or evening. Participating in both the language program and the business program will provide you with the deepest amount of knowledge possible.

The language program consists of five key components: the core classes (in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar); electives such as Chinese character writing; one-on-one or group tutoring; a partnered language exchange, which connects you with a native Chinese speaking student; and social activities such as the Peking Duck Feast and karaoke nights.

The business program also consists of five key components:

Ø      Lectures

Ø      Company Seminars

Ø      On-Site Study Trips

Ø      Business Salons

Ø      Internship

The two programs work together, like two wheels moving towards the same goal: your ability to learn Mandarin and understand the business practices in China.

LECTURES

Hear about the business world from the world itself. Hand-selected business professors from China’s leading Business and Economics University will present a series of lectures that explore a variety of topics, to help give you a background of China’s business policies. The topics range from China's unique business practices, its economic, political and legal framework, to its management style. The first two lectures review China’s economic development, examining historical events such as the Cultural Revolution that impacted its growth. Other topics discussed will include:

COMPANY SEMINARS

We bring the companies to you. We have arranged for executives and plant managers of leading foreign companies operating in China to come to you. They will present a series of presentations designed to provide you with further information on the expatriate business community. The seminars highlight the different forms of foreign investment in China, the various company practices and operations that exist, and the numerous management styles and marketing strategies employed by the companies. As executives and plant managers, the speakers have years of hands-on experience and offer a variety of tips and strategies to help you navigate your way through the business world in China.

Past speakers include representatives from:

ON-SITE STUDY TRIPS

Each visit consists of a short overview of the company’s policies and operations, a tour of the facilities, and where applicable, product sampling. You will have a chance to pull back the curtain and observe various operating standards including quality control, health and safety standards, employee training protocols, and manufacturing facilities.

Past on-site study trips have included:

Of course, you will not be confined to seeing only China’s business side. In addition to the social activities listed above, you will have the opportunity to visit some of the country’s spectacular sights, like the Great Wall, Tian'anmen Square
